What is the IOSH Leading Safely Course?
IOSH Leading Safely is an awareness-level course developed by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH), a UK‑based chartered membership organization for occupational safety professionals. It is designed for senior leaders, executives, directors, managing directors, senior managers, or team leaders who influence strategic direction and safety culture in their organisations. The course helps participants integrate high-level safety and health priorities into decision-making, governance, and business strategy.
Duration & Format
Typically delivered in a single day (around 5 hours), often preceded by a diagnostic questionnaire to tailor the learning to the leader’s current approach and experience.
Available in multiple formats: in-person, virtual classroom, or hybrid, depending on provider offerings.
Course Content & Structure
Outcomes & Benefits
Who Should Attend?
Ideal for those in executive or leadership positions—CEOs, managing directors, directors, and senior managers—who have strategic influence over health and safety but may not work in hands-on safety roles.
There are no formal entry requirements, though participants benefit most if they already hold some leadership or decision-making role.
How It Differs from IOSH Managing Safely
Managing Safely targets line managers and supervisors, focusing on practical risk assessment, hazard control, incident investigation, and workplace implementation. It’s a more in-depth course—typically over multiple days—covering seven modules and workplace-based assessment.
Leading Safely, by contrast, is shorter, more strategic, and geared toward leadership influence rather than tactical health and safety management.

- Plan‑Do‑Check‑Act (PDCA) HSMS Integration – Participants apply PDCA principles to health and safety within their organisation and develop a personal improvement plan.
Outcomes & Benefits
- On completion, delegates receive an IOSH certificate in Leading Safely.
- Develop a strategic understanding of how safety integrates into broader business objectives.
- Ability to benchmark current safety leadership and formulate an action-driven improvement plan tailored to the organisation.
- Contributes to improved reputation, reduced incidents, increased productivity, and stronger brand value when safety is well-led.
