What a Workplace Vibration Assessment Is

A workplace vibration assessment is a structured evaluation of employee exposure to hand-arm vibration (HAV) or whole-body vibration (WBV) during work activities. Its purpose is to identify vibration risks, measure exposure levels, and determine whether action is required under the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005.
Regular exposure to vibration from tools, machinery or vehicles can lead to serious health conditions, including Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), carpal tunnel syndrome and lower back disorders. A vibration assessment helps employers protect workers and remain legally compliant.
During a vibration assessment, a competent assessor will typically:

  • Identify tools, equipment or vehicles that generate vibration
  • Determine which employees are exposed and for how long
  • Review manufacturer vibration data and usage patterns
  • Calculate daily exposure values (A(8))
  • Compare exposure levels against legal action and limit values
  • Recommend practical control measures to reduce risk

Control measures may include selecting lower-vibration equipment, limiting exposure time, implementing maintenance programmes, introducing job rotation, and providing appropriate training and health surveillance.
A workplace vibration assessment supports proactive risk management, protects employee health, and demonstrates compliance with current health and safety legislation.

Why Is a Vibration Assessment Important?

A vibration assessment is essential because prolonged exposure to workplace vibration can cause serious, long-term health conditions that are often irreversible.

Hand-arm vibration from power tools and machinery can lead to Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), nerve damage and loss of grip strength. Whole-body vibration, commonly associated with vehicles and heavy plant, can contribute to back pain and musculoskeletal disorders.

Conducting a vibration assessment is important because it:

  • Identifies employees at risk before health damage occurs
  • Measures exposure levels against legal action and limit values
  • Helps prevent long-term occupational illnesses
  • Supports compliance with the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005
  • Reduces sickness absence and potential compensation claims
  • Demonstrates a proactive commitment to employee wellbeing

Without proper assessment and control, vibration-related conditions can develop gradually and may not be noticed until permanent damage has occurred.
A structured vibration assessment allows employers to introduce practical control measures early, protecting both their workforce and their organisation.
